(CNN) -- Former Sen. Fred Thompson on Tuesday ended his run for the presidency, coming off the heels of a disappointing third-place finish in South Carolina's GOP primary and heading into the showdown state of Florida next week. "Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States," Thompson said in a statement.
As I posted on the 19th, "Southern-Fried Finale," South Carolina was Fred Thompson's last stand. He made it official today. It's really too bad, in a way, because there is now only one conservative left in the race. It appears more and more that the days of the GOP basse even recognizing a conservative much less nominating one are long gone.
Now there are only four and a half GOP candidates remaining. McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul are all-in. Giuliani is half-in (a half may be generous...)

Well I am deeply sad today. I really liked Fred and that was where Mary and I were putting our vote and resources. Now with him out I find myself without a candidate to back. Many criticized him for his 'laid back' attitude but that was simply because he wouldn't be constainted by the sound-bite nation we live in. On his website he had released some very solid positions on economy to health care. I find myself with very few canidates that I can back with my own personal integerity intact. This is so frustrating.
I am now researching the remaining 4.5 left on the GOP side.
As a side note I would love your take on the Democratic Debates. I have been 'forcing' myself to watch them. I am sad to say that the race thing is seeming to be a will-o-wisp that the Clintons are throwing out there and making a bigger issue then obama. I only noticed two things of substance thrown out there last night. The contrast around Health-Care and economy positions.
Miss you dude. Can't wait until October.
I'm with ya, Ben. It's a pretty unbelievable situation we find ourselves in. Thompson really was the only 'front-runner' who was conservative. I'm trying to keep up with the Dems - watched some of their debate - but it's tough to sit through. I'll try to do better at assessing their side of things. We dodged a big bullet today on the market but the fundamentals are still all out of whack. Meanwhile, the pres of our favorite place is losing favor big time. Looking forward to Oct.
Don't kill yourself (seriously) in listening to dems debates. I am just curious on your opinion.
Yeah. It is amazing what is happening around the world.
I am reserving judgement on the markets until the end of the week. Also, I am predicting a collapse of the china market in Summer (going on record here). The reason I feel this is because the their GDP growth is self fueled by speculative buying in their own housing market, unregulated 'funds' (think circa 1920's) and a gov't spending on the Olymipics. None of these are substainable and with US business retrenching they won't have any buyers when they go soft. Other asian economies will suffer/slow down but be ok. I *think* that this could be the event that breaks the yuan out of fixed position with US dollar. US dollar will be fine due to its tie to the Oil price and UAE (and related states).
I can't prove it but my own hunch is that part of Bush's 20 billion sale of arms to the Saudi's and other gulf states was an agreement that they would keep the oil tied to the dollar and not the Euro.
